Apple trumps Nokia for smartphone share on Nokia's home turf

Apple produced a symbolic win late Thursday after an IDC study revealed that it had beaten Nokia for smartphone market share in Nokia's core market of Western Europe. The iPhone slipped from 24.6 percent share a year ago to 20.8 percent, but Nokia's market share collapsed from 40.6 percent to just 19.6 percent in one year, giving Apple the top spot. Apple shipped 49 percent more iPhones to the region to hit 4.4 million where Nokia saw its shipments drop from 4.9 million to 4.2 million.

RIM shipped more BlackBerry phones to Europe than before, 3.5 million, but the climb wasn't enough to stop it from dropping to third place at 16.5 percent. Android's rapid rise, meanwhile, helped HTC more than double its share and tie with RIM. Samsung's Galaxy S almost single-handedly helped catapult the company from just 2.5 percent of European smartphones last year to 12.1 percent in early 2011.

In all cellphones, Nokia faced a second upset as Samsung's smartphone push helped it take over the top spot at 29.3 percent; Nokia fell to 27.9 percent. Apple saw a larger relative gain to 9.8 percent but was steady at third place.

Local device research manager Francisco Jeronimo explained the reversal of fortunes as a lesson for Nokia and others not to presume their names and existing dominance would guarantee success in the future. Apple and Samsung were succeeding because they understood trends quickly and leapt on touchscreen phones. Nokia is well known for having been slow to adopt touchscreens and did little to improve Symbian until Symbian^3 last year, ultimately having to switch to Windows Phone to catch up.

"These results show how volatile this market is and how important it is not to underestimate the trends," the analyst explained. "Companies like Nokia (and Ericsson in the past) may have strong brands and big market shares as Nokia always had, but can be overtaken by their competitors on a blink of an eye."

Nokia slips out finished Symbian^3 SDK

Nokia on Wednesday released version 1.0 of the Symbian^3 software development kit (SDK). With it, third party developers can create apps for the OS, which is used in the company's flagship N8, which debuted more than a year ago, as well as the C6, C7, E6 and E7, among others. Included in the SDK is documentation, API references, examples, an installer for ActivePerl and an emulator, but not an IDE for a simplified development environment.

The final version includes VGA resolution support for the E6 pro phone and support for the Qt 4.7 and Qt Mobility 1.1 programming interfaces. The browser has been updated to version 7.3.1.1. A Three Plane Comms architecture improves data flow performance. Added Symbian standards include OpenWF support, SQLite 3, XML parsing and more. Korean and Chinese languages are present as well.

Supported runtimes include both Nokia's multi-platform Qt as well as native Symbian C++, in-between Java technology, and Web Runtime (WRT).

Nokia N8 to come in pink with Symbian Anna update

Nokia has announced a pink version of its flagship Symbian phone, Ovi Store. It will come preloaded with the Symbian Anna update, at around the same time as the update will become available to all other N8 users.

Baring the new external paint job and the updated OS, the device retains the same hardware as the original N8. This includes its highly-specified12-megapixel camera, a 680MHz processor and a new graphics core. Its audio capabilities remain a highlight with Dolby Digital Plus support over HDMI to a TV. It centers on a 3.5-inch 640x360 capacitive touchscreen and it includes 16GB of RAM, which is expandable via its microSD slot.

The pink model joins the black, orange, blue, green and silver models in Nokia’s N8 lineup.

Nokia: we won't enter tablets unless we can be unique

Nokia chief Stephen Elop hinted in an interview with YLE late Wednesday that the company would be more cautious about entering tablets than others. He believed the company could go either with Windows or an in-house platform like MeeGo, but the team had to choose what was right and distinctive. The iPad was continuing to succeed partly because it was facing a glut of similar designs that couldn't distinguish themselves, and Nokia's plans would involve something unique.

"There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace, only one of them is doing really well," Elop said in a reference to the iPad. "And my challenge to the team is, I don't wanna be the 201st tablet on the market that you can't tell [apart] from all of the others. We have to take a uniquely Nokia prospective."

What that would entail is still uncertain. The company filed for two tablet design patents that suggest a look superficially like that of the N8 smartphone and could theoretically use Symbian. An alliance with Microsoft and a desire to stand out through MeeGo, though, could leave it waiting for a tablet-ready interface from either OS. Windows won't have that until Windows 8 in late 2012, but a tablet-native MeeGo has already been seen in development.

Nokia been usually been one of the slower companies to adapt to modern mobile trends and has paid for it through its drop to 29 percent phone share. As a virtual non-competitor in tablets, however, it has the luxury to enter the market when and how it wants. Google and RIM have both rushed to get out competitive alternatives to the iPad interface but have so far been criticized for bugs, a lack of polish and missing third-party or even first-party apps.

Nokia offloads Symbian to Accenture, cuts 4,000 jobs

Nokia on Wednesday took more drastic steps in a bid to trim many of its costs in the Windows Phone transition. The company planned to move all its Symbian software development to the consulting firm Accenture. It would see 3,000 jobs move directly to Accenture with a deal signed in the summer and all employees changing hands by the end of 2011.

The deal would see Accenture provide apps and services to support Windows Phone efforts at Nokia and others in the environment. When possible, Accenture would be one of the first Nokia would reach for smartphone and service development help.

Independently of the Symbian shift, Nokia also planned to slash about 4,000 extra jobs by the end of 2012. The cuts would come in waves as teams complete products and Nokia built its production up for Windows Phone. Nokia hoped to cut its expenses for 2013 by the equivalent of $1.47 billion.

The combined 7,000 displaced jobs may create an uproar among Nokia staff, who already protested the OS switch even before cuts were announced. Some at the company have criticized Nokia chief Stephen Elop for allegedly abandoning Nokia's distinctiveness and emptying the company's core talent. Elop has countered by arguing the cuts were necessary to adapt Nokia to the modern era, that the company would stand out through customization, and that Nokia was on a burning platform where the only choice was to take a chance.

By its own estimates, Nokia's total phone share has dropped below 30 percent and is quickly putting it within striking distance of competitors, particularly in smartphones where Apple and Google are still rising. The company is still successful in budget phones for the developing world but has struggled to stay relevant as Samsung carved into the mid-range of conventional cellphones and Apple, RIM, and multiple Android supporters have been taking over the smartphone category.

Nokia, Navteq to reorganize maps, social networking

An internal memo received by PhoneScoop indicates Nokia and Navteq will significantly change their mapping and social networking services. This will include new social-location apps, service and developer experiences. Also, high-value location content that brings "differentiated" experiences are also part of the changeover.

What's more, a high-value advertising network will monetize this new ecosystem, the note says. It will provide local commerce services for brands and merchants.

Starting on May 1, Nokia's Executive VP Tero Ojanpera and Navteq CEO Larry Kaplan will begin work on a new business unit that will bring all of Nokia's location assets and social-location services into one.

Many divisions from both companies will be transferred to a newly created Mobile Phones Business Unit. Only Nokia phones running on Windows Phone will be targeted, but Navteq data will be made available to business partners.

Finally, the company says these changes will bring about the "next generation of location and commerce capabilities for the entire industry."

It's not known when these plans will be made public.

Nokia profit declines as market share falls

Profit before tax fell 1.9pc from the same period a year before to €403m (£355.7m) on net sales of €10.4bn, nonetheless beating analyst estimates.

The Finnish company, which once dominated the world mobile phone market, has been losing ground to its competitors in recent years. Its share of the market slipped to 29pc in the three months to the end of March, from 33pc a year before.

Stephen Elop, chief executive , who joined from Microsoft last September, said he expected the second quarter to be “challenging”. Operating margins from its mobile phone business will fall from 9.8pc to as low as 6pc over the next three months, Nokia predicted.

Apple reported on Thursday that quarterly profit had almost doubled, driven by sales of the iPhone.

However, Nokia investors took heart from the announcement that a $975m acquisition of Motorola Siemens’ network assets can now be completed after China’s Ministry of Commerce approved the deal. It should be completed by April 29.

“They are decent results, but the outlook in Q2 is a bit weak,” said Odon de Laporte, an analyst at Crédit Agricole. “It’s good they have signed the agreement.”

Nokia announced in February that it would abandon its Symbian operating system, which had been lagging behind Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android, in favour of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. Nokia shares have fallen 25.4pc since the tie-up.

The shares had gained 2.2pc to €6.07 in Helsinki trading by the early afternoon.

Nokia sees phone share drop to 29%, signs Microsoft deal

Nokia struggled on Thursday as it saw a drop both in its financials and its market share. Its operating profit dropped 35 percent year-to-year to the equivalent of $1.03 billion as a slight increase in smartphone shipments wasn't enough to offset steeper drops in its basic phone mix. It shipped 108.5 million phones in the winter, a one-point increase from last year but low enough that Nokia expected to drop from 33 percent share to 29 percent.

Most of the losses came in Asia-Pacific and North America. Sales in China have been hit hard by low-cost Android phones and the lack of dual-SIM phones, leading to a sales drop of seven percent, while North American sales were cut by a steep 56 percent as the combination of Android and the iPhone left Nokia with just 1.2 million phones selling in the continent.

The average price was lower on smartphones as it turned to cheaper models to get sales, but Nokia saw a slight boost for the prices of basic phones.

The poor news nonetheless came as Nokia and Microsoft formally signed their official agreement. Along with a decision to use Windows Phone and an ad revenue sharing deal, Nokia is providing its Ovi Maps and other location services to Windows Phone as a whole. It will also contribute improvements to camera technology for the OS and run a Nokia-labeled app store that uses the Windows Phone Marketplace backbone but will also serve Symbian and S40 hardware.

Microsoft, along with the artificial jump in market share, will get to run Bing search on Nokia devices as well as use Nokia's carrier billing to help users pay for apps without needing a credit card. Many in developing countries can't buy from mobile app stores as they have to use cash and prepaid services.

Nokia admitted that the "unique nature" of the deal meant that Microsoft was paying for the increased market share with "billions of dollars," including some for patent deals.

As part of the signing, Nokia confirmed that it planned "volume shipments" of its first Windows Phone devices in 2012. The statement didn't preclude a late 2011 launch, but converted phones like the rumored W7 may be used as test runs before ground-up designs arrive later.

Nokia still faced trouble for the rest of 2011 as it predicted that its device sales would largely stay the same through the spring and summer, going up in the fall only because of the usual holiday boost. Most of its planned phone launches for 2011 wouldn't ship until the second half of the year, it said.

Nokia C2-06 dual-SIM phone sighted in India

Images of Nokia's new C2-06 cell phone leaked out of India today. The images, posted by Hackintosh-India, were reportedly obtained from a local tester. Key features of the phone include slots for two SIM cards and both a touchscreen and keypad for input.

The dual SIM is particularly useful for people in Asia and eastern Europe who might want to alternate between two prepaid services.

The phone most likely runs Nokia's Symbian Series 40 OS (6th edition). The included camera is only two-megapixel and has no flash. Other features not present are Wi-Fi and 3G. The battery is an older style BL-5C. This limited functionality indicates Nokia is targeting the phone towards lower-end users.

Nokia previews Symbian's new UI on an N8

A new user interface for the Symbian OS is coming to Nokia handsets, MyNokiaBlog has found. Images from a press conference in China reveal the company's flagship N8 running the new software. Believed to apply mostly to existing Symbian^3 devices, a new homescreen moves the battery, signal, time and carrier symbols to a small bar atop the screen to save space.

The widgets aren't confined to a rectangular area with six per screen like in past interfaces, and there are three new soft buttons at the bottom of the screen, believed to represent the call, options and menu functions.

During the presentation, Nokia also promised completely new devices, improved hardware performance, updates delivered over the air and an ongoing Qt development. Installation of new software is promised to be easy and controlled by the user.

Overall, the new interface is said to look more like Android OS and may be an attempt to court users during the transition over to Windows Phone.

Nokia says WP7 design is real, denies Microsoft Trojan horse

Nokia Smart Devices lead Jo Harlow at her company's press conference at Mobile World Congress tonight confirmed that its Windows Phone 7 prototype was real. It didn't have details of the phone but showed the large touchscreen, multi-colored model twice. Harlow hinted that the phone could be ready in 2011, hinting that Elop would be "much happier" if a Nokia WP7 device was on the market this year.

CEO Stephen Elop meanwhile flatly denied suspicions that he was a Microsoft mole sent to push Windows Phone 7 at a rival company and artificially inflate its market share. When asked if he was a "Trojan horse," the company head said the answer "obviously is no" and pointed to the organizational structure making that difficult. The "entire management team" was involved, and the board of directors had the final say on whether or not the platform switch went forward, he said.

Elop further acknowledged company protests and said the results were mixed. While development and sales were excited, some engineers working on Symbian and other platforms were clearly "hurting," he said.

On development, he admitted that Qt was "not the plan" for WP7, noting that Microsoft was providing the brunt and that it would fragment the environment. Nokia would still offer something of its own, however.

Nokia likewise wouldn't want to be the exclusive maker of WP7 devices. It would work best if it had to compete with others in an "ecosystem," Elop said.

Much of the discussion reviewed things Nokia had already said in announcing its landmark deal. The company deliberately chose WP7 both to avoid the commoditization of Andriod but also to create a more competitive market, where at least three major, modern smartphone platforms existed rather than risk an Apple and Google duopoly. A MeeGo device would exist this year, but its role was no longer a central one afterwards. Symbian is ultimately being phased out in high end devices.

Nokia X7 for AT&T axed because of lack of carrier attention

Nokia's decision to cancel the X7's US launch came from a lack of faith from AT&T, insiders said on Wednesday. The Symbian^3 gaming phone would have been introduced for AT&T just ahead of Mobile World Congress in mid-February but was voluntarily dropped as it wasn't going to get "enough marketing and subsidies support" from the American carrier. The WSJ's informants said the X7 would still ship, but only to other countries.

Neither the Finnish phone maker nor AT&T confirmed the cancellation or the device details, as none of these had been made public.

A cancellation compounds Nokia's problems in the US. Although it has repeatedly promised to fix its US situation for the past several years, its market share has continued to slide and now is virtually non-existent in the smartphone category in the US. It has had trouble negotiating carrier deals and for the most part has been limited to selling unsubsidized phones.

AT&T has openly stated that it wants to diversify its lineup in the face of the Verizon iPhone and launched three high-end Android phones at CES, but a decision to skip on the X7 would be a symbolic lack of confidence in Nokia's current lineup adding to that diversification. The company won't see a radical change in its phone strategy until the first MeeGo phone ships later this year. Symbian^3 still trails behind in ease of use and app support compared to both Android and the iPhone, and phones attached to it so far have lagged somewhat in processor performance and screen resolution.

Nokia has taken some steps to solve the problem, including folding Symbian back into the company and hiring an American CEO. Many of the benefits won't come until later this year at the earliest as the two will need time to permeate the company.

The one-stop travel app is becoming more popular and we’ve seen a few around – this one even features a spinning globe so you can see which parts of the world are currently in daylight and where is dark.
This app covers all the usual bases – real-time currency exchange for 184 currencies, five-day weather forecasts and time adjusted for various destinations. And, as with some of the other comprehensive travel apps we’ve seen, there’s also a premium version that costs £3.36 a month for a subscription or £25 a year – that gives you up-to-the-minute flight departure information – you’ll get alerts for delays, cancellations and gate changes.

There’s also a digital vault included with this version, so you can store sensitive numbers and details inside. A bit of overkill if you ask us, though some may find it useful. Aside from the extras, the app is a little slow to get around and we were surprised at just how sluggish a lot of it was, even when we were connected to a reasonably fast Wi-Fi network. Regardless, many will find World Traveler a good tool to have with them when moving between countries.

According to the Nokia bumph for this app, “Nokia Internet Radio enables you to discover and enjoy the radio shows transmitted over the internet.”

While you can certainly enjoy the radio stations on offer here – and hundreds are indeed available – there’s little to help you discover them. What it should have said is that you have to scroll down through a massive list of categories in the vain hope that you’ll find something you like.

While there’s plenty of choice and you can add stations to a Favourites list, there’s little order. Still, it’s a good way to get to stations on your Nokia that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access easily from your handset and you can at least search for stations by name or other criteria.

So whether you like varied music or simply want to see all the funk stations you can stream online, there’s something here for you.

Importer of Fake Nokia Handsets in Sweden Results in Nokia Damages Claim

Cloned Nokia handsets have been somewhat of a passion of hate for me over the last few years, especially when these cloned Nokia handsets are sold to unsuspecting consumers as genuine. ·We have seen our fare share of these unhappy buyers too within our very own Nokiausers forums. ·

Members registering to our forums because they either suspect something isn't quite right with their purchase, or simply put, the device they have does not perform in the way they expected it to work.

Due to seeing so many unhappy members come and go through our forums after buying a cloned Nokia device, I took it upon myself to try and get something done about it, however, cloned Nokia devices, well, any cloned/fake mobile phone for that matter has a massive Global market, which seems to be untouchable. These Chinese factories making cloned mobile phones are as big as the real manufacturing plants, and are governed and protected by mafia type level of security. No joke!

What I did personally, to try and help people not to fall for these fake Nokia handsets, was to educate our forum members on what to look out for with a cloned device, posting photos side by side of cloned device next to a real Nokia handset. ·We first had a stead flow of Nokia N95-1 fake handsets, and then of course, the most troublesome to date, the N95 8GB, with several different level of clones, all ranging from small details added to fool the unsuspecting consumer.

The Chinese even hacked an old version of Nokia's OS, and increased the level of functionality of their clones so that when you entered *#0000# the result that popped up would display a real, valid firmware version. ·This of course eventually fooled even more people, but the likes of myself, and a few other Nokiausers forums members have a very keen eye on protecting our forum members, and are always ready to help anyone should they ever have a question regarding a device before handing over their hard earned.

Now we are seeing cloned devices of the latest Nokia handsets, the N8, the E7, and even the N9. ·So what exactly is Nokia doing about this Global problem? Lets ask them here shall we, and see if we get a reply. ·I had emailed Nokia sometime ago regarding what kind of investigative measures they may have in place to combat these fake, cloned Nokia handsets hitting the mass consumer markets, but back then I didn't have the reach I do now, so I will certainly be putting this question to them once more very soon. ·Especially after reading the following article, which this post of mine is referring to, it was posted locally on a Swedish website. ·Read for yourselves, excuse the translation, I used Google Translate....

So as you can see, yes this is only a very small number, just 20 fake Nokia handsets, and the importers intent is clear, he obviously was planning on selling these on as genuine handsets to unsuspecting consumers. ·Although a small number, and legal action being taken, I would like to see this kind of investigation escalated on a global level, with teams heading out to China to uncover these factories, and hit the supply at the very heart of their manufacturing processes rather than cherry-picking small, insignificant cases such as the story above.

Over the last few years I have been doing some investigating of my own, and sourced several factories manufacturing cloned devices. ·I published some of my findings here on Nokiausers, and as a result was contacted by the BBC, but after exchanging emails, and some details, answering questions, little to nothing ever come of it sadly.

I have painstakingly gathered photos, which I have learned from, and detailed every single trick in the book these counterfeiters have put into motion for one reason, and one reason only. ·To rip people off, period.! Yes I know some cloned devices suit some people, with dual sim functionality and whatnot, but at the end of the day, these are counterfeit items, and something needs doing about it.

Sadly, all this counterfeiting appears to go on right in front of everyone's face, blatantly on the web, and links available for all, so even with this transparency, why does counterfeiting continue? Why and how do these counterfeiting rings manufacturer cloned devices before even the real deal are released, where do these counterfeiters get the specifications(external dimensions) etc? ·You see, this process of counterfeiting goes much more deeper than one thinks, with some level of serious leakage from the likes of Nokia internal info, and alike.

As you can probably tell from my tone in writing, and before I turn this post into a rant so to speak, I will end it now, but let me tell you that, I just don't like to see people ripped off of their hard earned cash, and something needs to be done about it, and I'm ready to join Nokia in their fight to combat, and take these counterfeiting rings down once and for all.! I know its no easy task, and will need Government level support, with policing, and very careful planning, but it can be done, surely? Nokia?

This app has been created by Nokia and offers easy-to-use web services related to your current location as determined by the GPS chip in your mobile phone. You’re able to check the weather where you are at a glance as well as get other local information such as movie times or details of local restaurants.

It’s not just restricted to your current location though, you can search for information on anywhere you choose. You can also get information on local events too and we were pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of this information – a local market was listed, for example, as well as several good local restaurants.

We clicked on the name of a local museum and we were given a description as well as basic contact information. We expect you’d be able to phone from the app, but the phone information didn’t show properly. You are, however, able to click the map icon on any local location to be taken directly to the Nokia map app. This all works exceedingly well as is how local information should be presented. What’s more, it’s far more comprehensive and effective than if you just searched in Google.

Nokia Apps : Mazelock

This app is a simple screen lock app that, once introduces a further stage in addition to sliding your lock-screen button. It’s an add-on you really don’t need, but it does add an extra stage of security should you really need. The description of the app as innovative is a bit erroneous though – it apes the Android-lock screen pattern where you need to trace your finger over a screen of nine dots in the right order. You can also protect your side bar slider key – double click the menu key to lock the phone.

There is a default lock pattern but you can easily change this of course. Indeed, you can change quite a few things about how the app looks and feels including text colours and image background. This is a bit of an extraneous app then, but it’s not all bad – it can provide better security for your handset – and certainly makes you look cooler, too.

As well as the ability to search scheduled train times – which is pretty useful in itself – you’re now able to purchase tickets from the app. These are sent to you first class by thetrainline.com or you can arrange to collect them at your local station should you wish.

The first time you buy tickets you’ll have to input all your credit or debit card details and there’s no other way to describe it – this is a right pain. However, on subsequent visits you’re able to use the same details again and just enter the three digit CVV security code from the back of the card. It can, however, be hard to see what tickets are cheapest and, while it’s nowhere near as good an experience as it is on the web, the ability to buy tickets from your handset can be a godsend if you’re in a tricky situation.

Nokia Apps : We Are Pop Slags

This app is a simple one, but if you’re interested in pop it’ll definitely be of interest. We Are Pop Slags is digest of pop music-related videos.

As well as official footage, the app indexes live performances from various otherwise rarely seen appearances – at the time of writing this included Katy Perry performing at a fashion show and Kylie doing a public appearance at New York’s Rockerfeller Center.

However, when you click on a video to view it, you’re simply taken through to a news story. Although text in these stories says ‘click here’ to view embedded video, it actually doesn’t work in practice and you’ll need to click the link to view the story on the We Are Pop Slags website via the traditional Nokia browser.

A bit odd, especially as we couldn’t get some videos to show. The app is, however, updated regularly – there were four or five new stories the day we checked it out. Unfortunately though, that’s about as far as it gets. You can send an email recommending the app to a friend as well as access the Ovi Store, but that really is it. We Are Pop Slags will be an interesting diversion for some – providing you can get it to work…

Nokia's Ovi Suite 3.0 exits beta

Nokia's Ovi Suite 3.0 software for computers has now been released in its final form. The software is meant to act as a complement to Nokia handsets, letting users sync music, data, apps and download free maps to transfer onto their phones. The latest Ovi Suite promises more reliable connection and syncing between the computer and phone, and allows users to receive recommendations for new music, apps, games and other products and services from their Home view.

Ovi Suite 3.0 also lets users create music libraries for local playback and download them to their computer before syncing with their handsets. Photos and videos taken on their handset can also be viewed in the Suite. The app can be configured to use everyday speech, and text messages can be exported to the computer.

Current software can be upgraded to the latest version, and some users may have already received the notification and downloaded the 3.0 update.

This app is essentially a game, but it’s one designed to help improve your basic maths skills. The idea is that you solve the arithmetic problems you’re presented with as fast as possible.

When you first launch the app you can choose to either go into Practice or solve a Challenge. The app also enables you to view High scores as well as select different skill levels via the Options. There are three skill levels to choose from – Amateur, Skilled or Expert – and you can also select the number of problems to solve – 10, 20 or 30 – at a time.

Once the challenge stats, you need to complete the set number of puzzles – which come up as “6-1=” and so on – by tapping the answers into a numeric keypad displayed on the screen – stats at the bottom show how many you have wrong and right as well as how many challenges you have left to complete.

Sadly, the real problem was the unresponsiveness of the screen of our Nokia N97 mini and so we were left with a slightly sour taste. However, once you get over this, this is quite a cool little app and used regularly we reckon it would certainly improve brain dexterity.

Music Explorer lets you quickly search and preview the music in your local Ovi Music Store as well as keep track of the top tracks that appeal to you most. Things are arranged by genre, so you’re able to choose the music that’ll be of most interest to you. Music Explorer also gives you full access to exclusive offers and features on Nokia devices.

Over 3.5 million Nokia N8 sold since launch 3 months ago

Nokia's smartphone flagship N8 has sold between 3.5 and 4 million since launch on September 30 according to independent Finnish research firm

The 12 megapixel camera is one of Nokia N8 stronges selling points and it has received good critics among reviewers. We believe the Nokia brand name can be blamed for many of the sold units. Several reputable camera magazines and web sites rated the N8 as an excellent camera phone much because of the Carl Zeiss optics and not because of the user interface. The N8 was the first model running on Symbian^3 operating system which was given thumb down by many critics.

Nevertheless, the sucessor Nokia E7 which basically is a N8 without the 12 megapixel camera but with a QWERTY keyboard was supposed to be available this year, but are delayed until next year. This gives Nokia a couple of more weeks to push the N8.

The independent Finnish research firm Inderes said yesterday that 3.5 to 4 million Nokia N8 devices were estimated to have shipped since launch. For a comparizon, Samsung's flagship, the Galaxy S has sold 9.3 million since June. This is over 4.5 million per quarter. Slightly more than Nokia's N8.

Nokia has a strong appearance in India, UAE, Malaysia and of course it's homeland Finland. These are the markets where Nokia N8 sales figures are nice reading for Nokia stock holders. An even though India is a typically country for entry level phones the high-end device N8 is doing well.

Nokia estimated to have moved four million N8s in fall

A rare prediction of Nokia's smarphone sales came today from Finland-based equity research group Inderes Oy. Pointing to chip orders, Nokia's recruitment at its Salo factory and even web search traffic, analysts estimated that Nokia would ship about four million units of its N8 smartphone flagship this fall. The demand so far was the highest in both Nokia's Finnish homeland and in countries where Apple and Google didn't have a significant footprint to start with, including India, Malaysia and the UAE.

While web traffic was readily admitted as an imperfect measurement of sales, sharp increases in searches indexed by Google Trends were often uncannily accurate at reflecting how well a given device was selling, Inderes Oy said. It pointed to search volume for the iPhone often correlating to the ratio by which Apple's sales went up. Searches in western countries often reflect an intention to buy.

By these ratios, the N8 would be selling only slightly slower than HTC's most popular phone line, the Desire, but above the Samsung Galaxy S. Samsung would still sell more of its phone as it started shipping earlier, in June versus September, but Nokia might be catching up relatively quickly.

Areas where the N8 led in searches often had distinct problems affording devices like the iPhone. Few Indians buy iPhones because the price is often well beyond their means, the analysts said; the least expensive iPhone costs the equivalent of $745, or enough that buying three could match the price of Tata's Nano car.

The results could show that the N8 wasn't a flop, such as with the N96, N97 and N900. Researchers attributed it to some users buying the 12-megapixel camera phone as an alternative to a dedicated point-and-shoot. The company nonetheless warned that Symbian^3 was still well behind Android and iOS and didn't say how well it expected other Nokia phones to manage, possibly leading to a decline even if the N8 fared well.

Nokia recently delayed the E7 to 2011 and has been mum on plans for the first part of the year beyond catching up on earlier predictions.

Nokia E7 given January release date and price?

The Nokia E7 has been given a possible release date, and more importantly, an early price point.

The new Symbian^3 handset from the Finnish firm will cost around $679 according to Amazon US, which means it will probably be around £500 when it makes the transition over to the UK.

When you consider it's a 4-inch OLED-toting QWERTY device, it's not the worst price in the world, especially when you consider the additional tech on board (HDMI connector, 8MP camera and inbuilt storage).

Stepping up

However, that price point is still going to put it squarely in competition with the iPhone 4, the Nexus S and Desire HD - something the Nokia N8 managed to pseudo-avoid with a much lower price tag.

But if you're still hankering after the new Nokia E7, then at least TheNokiaBlog has good news for you: it seems US retailers are taking delivery of stock around 13 January, so we can imagine a UK release date isn't too far behind.

Nokia has already delayed the release of the new E7 from last year, citing quality control for the user, but given we saw it back in September, the Finns need to get releasing before Mobile World Congress hits and we get a whole slew of new exciting phones to wish we had.

Google allegedly favoring Nokia for Honeycomb devices

An unusual claim Wednesday morning has asserted that Nokia is getting help from Google on a device using the Honeycomb version of Android. The Finnish phone maker was included along with HTC, Motorola, LG and Samsung as receiving "priority" for projects. Digitimes' sources didn't say what Nokia would be making that would encourage direct cooperation.

Publicly, Nokia has routinely insisted that it would never use Android in phones as the mobile OS didn't give it a way to differentiate the company from other manufacturers. Pressure has still existed to switch platforms as Symbian has been falling behind in features and MeeGo won't ship on a phone until early 2011 at best. Nokia has been willing to break from its own operating systems in the past for non-phone devices like the Booklet 3G but has usually been loyal to its own platforms.

Regardless of who was involved, Google's reported favoritism might be creating significant problems for traditional notebook manufacturers hoping to get involved. Where some of the first Honeycomb tablets could be ready as soon as late February, the conventional companies might have to wait until at least a month later, the tipsters said. Individual companies weren't named, but previous tips had MSI forced to wait until April to show its Android tablet.

The PC builders are potentially in serious trouble through the decision. As netbook sales are suffering due mostly to Apple's iPad, but they can't release tablets of their own to try and make up for the loss. Many of these supposedly don't believe that any of their Android 2.2 or Windows-based tablets will be successful and are deliberately keeping shipments low.

Nokia E5 - Is it as Easy to Use as it Looks?

In all its QWERTY-ness, the Nokia E5 made it out and its popularity has been steadily increasing since its launch. It’s no BlackBerry, but then again it offers no presumptions of being one. The E5 looks like a slightly higher-end and much needed update to the E63 which was Nokia's affordable E-series business class phone for those users who didn’t have the extra Rs. 6000 to shell out for the E72. Here’s a closer look.

Form Factor
The E5 is a simple looking QWERTY keypad loaded handset. It’s comfortable to use as the buttons are large and soft enough to go into a typing spree without your fingers getting coarse. The space bar also doubles up as a ‘Torch’ key. Essentially it turns on the LED for the camera to be used as a torch light. The 3.2-inch QVGA display is not scratch resistant so I’d suggest a screen guard as a precaution. The charging port, micro USB slot and 3.5mm handsfree socket are both placed at the top of the device making it really convenient for usage. A set of volume/zoom keys are on the right side of the device. Like the Nokia C3 two buttons on the side pop open the rear panel.

A real downer in the design is that the E5 has no hot swap for the microSD card. That’s also just about the only flaw in the whole design.

Features and Performance
Interface
There’s nothing radically new with the S60 platform except for the new Home Screen. It’s just a horizontal variant of previous versions but does make things just a little bit more interesting for access. The built-in Facebook application allows you to sync your phonebook contacts with your online contacts and merge them automatically. A couple of oddities in this system are – if you’ve saved contacts with nicknames, syncing is a big problem so you’ll have to manually handle most. Secondly, even though the system picks up the profile pic of your contact from FB you can’t use that image as a contact thumbnail like you would in Android. You’ll have to use an alternate image stored on the handset or capture one using the camera. The layout of these shortcuts is well designed though. You can access all correspondence with a contact in your shortcut bar from one space.

On the whole, the UI is smooth when it comes to navigating the menus or accessing apps. The E5 also handles multi-tasking quite efficiently. There’s just one instance where the handset isn’t as fast as required, but I’ll get to that in just a little while.

Media
The E5’s music player is, simply put, brilliant. Without tweaking the audio, music quality came in loud and clear as ever. If you don’t agree that’s probably because you’re using the bundled handsfree. My recommendation – don’t! Get yourself a better set and you’ll get a real kick out of the player. Amongst the EQ presets is a customizable option with an 8 band graphic EQ set up. Bass Boost and Stereo Widening options are also provided to add a little more pizazz to your tunes. The E5 is also provisioned with a Stereo FM radio and an Internet radio option which would work a whole lot better had 3G been prevalent all over. It works on EDGE of course but buffering takes a lot longer. Wi-Fi will obviously give you optimum quality.

Videos are easy to view provided they’re in the appropriate formats. The E5 reads files in MPEG4, 3GP and WMV formats. The handset's overall multimedia capabilities include a 30 day trial of Shazam, a voice recorder, Music search (that really didn’t work at all), a podcast app and Nokia’s Home Media app that let’s you sync media files from your home wireless services to your handset.

The handset came with no games preloaded but it’s an E-series device so you shouldn’t really expect any. If you want those apps though there are plenty available via the Ovi Store.

Nokia E7 on its way to amazon

Though the E7 was unveiled way back in September, it has stayed away from retail shelves with unshakable determination. Nokia’s elusive E7 can be pre-ordered through Amazon, although they don’t seem to have a clue on the exact shipping date of handset as yet.

Powered by the Symbian 3 OS, the device has a 640 x 360p 4” AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, a VGA camera and an 8MP dual LED flash camera. The last mentioned features a full screen 16:9 viewfinder, geo tagging, face recognition software, up to 2x zoom for images and up to 3x zoom for video recording.

The N7 offers onboard memory of around 16GB and runs in a BL-4D 1200mAh Li-ion battery that’s good for approximately nine hours of talk time on a GSM network or around 5 hours of talk time on a WCDMA connection. Users can avail of no less than three customizable homescreens and full web page browsing with this device.

The 3G-enabled phone boasts of a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard apart from Blueotooth 3.0, Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Flash Lite 4 support. The handset’s audio/video function is capable of playing out MP3, WMA, eAAC+, eAAC, AAC, H.264, 3GPP and MP4 formatted content.

Business users may like the integrated tools like Mail for Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile and support for intranet and extranet portals based on Microsoft’s Share Point server. Other attributes span over FM radio, HDMI connectivity, Dolby Digital Plus surround sound, support for IM, a dedicated graphics processor and much more.

Amazon is currently accepting pre-orders for the E7 at $679 and pledges to inform customers about the estimated delivery date when word on the same gets in. It’s being extended unlocked and in an anodized silver hued aluminum casing with the full manufacturer’s warranty.

Concept Nokia Windows Phone 7 Handset

There was a very large rumor earlier this month that Nokia was planning on getting on board with Windows Phone 7, and while we haven’t heard any more information about this, what we do have is a very sexy concept of what it might look like. Design company Mindsailor Studios put together this mockup of what a Nokia crafted WP7 phone might be, which does a very good job of showing hardware that looks very different from other WP7 devices.

Yeah, we know Nokia probably won’t go down this route. And we know that this is a third party concept without any grounding in fact.

Nokia Siemens deal for Motorola business delayedNEW YORK (AP) — Nokia Siemens Networks said Tuesday that a regulatory hurdle will keep it from completing its acquisition of Motorola Corp.'s network equipment business by the end of the year, as planned.

Instead, the joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. and Germany's Siemens AG plans to close the deal in the first quarter of 2011.

The company said that the Anti-Monopoly Bureau of the Ministry of Commerce of China still has to approve the takeover.

Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., is splitting into two companies effective Jan. 4. It is separating its consumer-oriented side, which makes cell phones and cable set-top boxes, from the side that sells police radios and barcode scanners to government and corporate customers. In preparation for the split, Motorola said in July that it would sell its network equipment division for $1.2 billion to Nokia Siemens Networks.

The split of Motorola has been driven by a desire to present two simple stories to investors rather than one complex one. It was announced in 2008, but delayed with phone sales collapsing.

Nokia N900 gets the Android hack treatment

Engadget reported that the hackers had managed to get Gingerbread running really smoothly on the device, and said it might even be stable enough for the great unwashed masses to try out, although Nokia is not going to like that one bit, and – disclaimer – it will void your warranty.

Analysts like Informa’s Malik Kamal-Saadi have long maintained that Nokia should be running Android on its handsets rather than the increasingly unpopular Symbian, which saw its US offices shuttered recently.

When RCR spoke to Kamal-Saadi recently, he had expressed the sentiment that Nokia was feeling mounting pressure to try Android on its handsets, which have failed to wow the smartphone buying crowds of the West.

“Symbian is dead in the water and sinking fast,” InStat’s Jim McGregor told RCR recently, despite the amount of money Nokia has invested into revamping the operating system. “Nokia is in deep trouble and I’m not sure what the firm can do about it.”

Well, Nokia might not be doing anything about it just yet, but it looks like hackers have taken the matter into their own hands.

Nokia E7-00
Could the Nokia E7-00 be the heavy-weight users new best friend? We think so, as its 4-inch touchscreen, slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and Symbian^3 operating system add up to one mighty fine piece of kit. The shaping and style is similar to the Nokia N8 and the build quality of the samples we’ve checked out has been great. What will impress people the most is just how slim Nokia has made this device, making it perfect for the busy traveller as well as the hectic social butterfly trying to keep their social networking in check.

Nokia C6-01
We may have only sample the Nokia C6-01 in preview mode to date but we have a feeling this may well become the entry-level smartphone users new best friend. When it comes to QWERTY messenger devices the Nokia E72 pretty much rules the roost but with the arrival of the Nokia E5 we got a more relaxed and consumer focussed take on the businessman’s favourite. You’ll find the same 2.4-inch screen size, same use of a cracking QWERTY keyboard with individual keys with a rubber coating, and even the same 5-Megapixel CCD camera setup. Nokia launches search for the world’s top five social media users

Following the launch of the Nokia C7 smartphone, Nokia has now kicked off a global competition to find the world’s biggest users of social media.

The Nokia C7 Social Challenge offers Facebook users the opportunity to gather votes for themselves through Nokia’s fan page. The top five people around the world with the most votes by January 3, 2011 will each be given 21 Nokia C7 smartphones for themselves and their friends, as well as the opportunity to host the party of a lifetime with assistance from Nokia and a designated party planner.

The Nokia C7 smartphone’s one-touch social media function allows consumers to receive live feeds from Facebook and Twitter directly to the device’s homescreen, and easily update their own status across these social networks.

To celebrate the launch of the competition, Nokia commissioned Oxford University Consulting to put together a report into the secrets of online popularity. The Nokia Soci@lite Report, written by Dr. Bernie Hogan, investigates the secrets to the popularity of a new group of digital social media networkers, named ‘Soci@lites’ defined as people with 5,000 friends.
According to the research, a 19 year-old person with 970 or more online friends who has an interest in music and provides advice to others has the greatest chance of winning the Nokia C7 Social Challenge. The study also implies that potential winners in the making enjoy outdoor activities, do not like to follow crowds, and frequently visit online discussion forums.

This unique profile of a Soci@lite has been determined by analysing the activity of social media users through 2010 for the Nokia Soci@lite Report. The characteristics, social interests and average age of users with the highest number of online friends were accessed. The study also reveals that on average, an individual remains in contact with less than 50 online friends at any given time. Additionally, women appear to have closer relationships with their online friends than men; and while women keep in contact with an average of 47 of their online friends, men interact with only 39 online friends on average.

The Nokia Soci@lite Report notes that previous studies have also shown that those with larger networks have a greater sense of well-being, longer lifespans and better access to important information such as new jobs or social events.

Nokia E7 Coming 2nd Week January 2011

Nokia’s next Symbian baby is slated to release in January Last week. But, some sources close to iGyaan tell us that the device will come as early as January 2nd week and at a relatively low price of 21,000 INR.

Nokia Smartphones are facing teething competition since the arrival of Android OS. The relative market share of Nokia has gone down by 36%. Low range phone segments have been taken over by Indian Manufacturers, While iOS and Android dominate the High-End Smartphone market. The E7 looks like a promising device for Nokia, But, Till the reinvent of the Symbian OS later next year the device may still see a slow response from the Indian market.

The Nokia E7 has a 4-inch capacitive AMOLED touchscreen that displays a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. The phone has a full QWERTY keyboard, an alphanumeric keypad on the screen and an angled slider for inputs. The E7’s body is made of anodized aluminum. It has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash that is capable of recording 1080p high definition video. It also has a VGA camera in the front for video calling.

There are also social networking apps on the Nokia E7, and emails get updated in real time. The phone has built in apps for Windows Messenger, Ovi Chat and shows SMS chats in threads.

It has an HDMI out port using which it can be connected to a high definition display. This is useful if you want to watch movies stored on your phone on a large HD television screen. The Nokia E7 has 16 GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 32 GB via a microSD card slot.

The E7 runs on the Symbian^3 operating system. Symbian^3 has around 250 new features over the earlier version. The OS promises the ability to multi task without running the phone’s battery out. The phone uses a 1200 mAh battery that supports up to 9 hours of GSM talk time.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread arrives on Nokia N900

Nokia’s N900 continues to prove itself a firm favorite with the modding community, now managing to get an Android 2.3 Gingerbread port before Google has even managed the official release for the Nexus One. The handiwork of NITDroid team member Alexey Roslyakov – aka DrunkDebugger – the port isn’t 100-percent functional but does allow for cellular and WiFi data access, audio and more.

If you use Nokia Chat, and received an email about the TOS (Terms Of Service) changes to the service not so long ago, more over, about Yahoo! powering the chat service, then great news, providing you accepted the TOS changes in the email mentioned.
The Chat client is now fully under way, and powered by Yahoo! This means that you can now add your Yahoo! Buddies to your IM client. See below for some Q&A.

What can I do now with Chat powered by Yahoo! that I couldn’t do before?
The main advantage is the ability to add Yahoo! Messenger friends to your Chat friend list. The way to do this is by going to Options > Add Friend, selecting Other domain and then entering your friend’s Yahoo! Messenger ID (i.e. friend@yahoo.com). Once they accept your friend request, their Yahoo! ID will appear with the rest of your Chat friend list. Now you can see when your friend is online and start a conversation.

Why can’t I log in to Chat through the application?
The most common reason that you will not be able to log in to your Chat account in the application is that you have not accepted the new Terms of Service (TOS). If you’re not sure if you have accepted the TOS yet, click onthis link and enter your Ovi username and password. Once you have accepted the new TOS, your account data will be migrated, and you will be able to log in to your account.

Why can’t I find Chat on my phone?
While there are some phones for which we don’t offer a Chat application today, the chat team are working very hard to change that situation, and recently announced that they are indeed working on a Chat application that will run on Symbian^3 and touch-enabled S60 5^th edition Nokia phones (follow this link for more information).

I know one of my friends is on-line so why does he appear as off-line?
You should be able to see if your friend is on-line if they are using the Chat application. However, if you are using the Chat application to log into Chat powered by Yahoo! and your friend is using the Contacts application, you will not be able to see when she is available to chat or to send her a friend request. And conversely, if you are using the Contacts application, you will not be able to see or chat with any of your friends who have started using the Chat application.

Why don’t I see my Yahoo! Messenger friends in my friend list when I log in to Chat?
While it is now possible to add Yahoo! Messenger friends to your Chat friend list, your Ovi account and Yahoo! account will remain separate from each other. You do have the ability to add all of your Yahoo! Messenger friends into your Chat friend list so that you can see that entire list at one time, but you will have to add each of these friends yourself rather than having them automatically populated.

Nokia eyeing Windows Phone 7 for new devices? Not to worry, Symbian will live on!

Rumors are circulating that Nokia is in talks with Microsoft to put the Windows Phone 7 OS onto its devices.

Russian site Mobile-review.com (via Winrumors.com) claims that Nokia has been in talks with Microsoft over putting WP7 on its devices for the past month following ex-Microsoft employee Stephen Elop’s appointment as Nokia CEO.

Does it make sense? Well, in many ways it does. Nokia, despite having pretty good penetration into the European market, is struggling to find a space between iOS and Android. Going with WP7 would allow Nokia to ride the wave of publicity that Microsoft is generating for its latest mobile platform.

However, I don’t think that we should take this as any indication that Nokia is planning to drop the Symbian OS. Despite it’s falling market share and lack of visibility when compared to iOS and Android, Symbian is still a an established OS with an established developer base and established selection of apps.

Nokia might eyeing WP7, but Symbian isn’t going anywhere.

Nokia files 13 more claims against Apple

The latest legal move by Nokia (NOK) against Apple Inc. (AAPL) involves 13 more infringement claims in courts in the U.K., Germany and Holland.

Nokia started the suit in October 2009 when it alleged Apple had infringed on 10 patents. Apple counter-sued in response, and extended the action by claiming Nokia infringed more of its patents.

This latest claim is the fourth time Nokia has filed claims against the computer leviathan, with previous claims in Delaware and Wisconsin covering both 3G and wi-fi technology.

Earlier this month, Nokia had requested the U.S. International Trade Commission halt imports of Apple products, and Apple asked the ITC to do the same to Nokia products.

The ITC investigated the claims, which put a temporary hold on the legalities, but no ruling has yet been made.

Nokia claimed in announcing its legal action that some of the patents had been filed more than 10 years before the iPhone was launched to the public. Apple has not responded to this latest filing.

Both sides continue to deny each others claims.

Symbian Sites now Offline, New Home at Symbian.Nokia.com

Following the recent announcements of The Symbian Foundation shutting up shop, and actually closing its online doors on Friday past, you can now find out the latest goings on with Symbian over at the new Symbian home page at www.symbian.nokia.com.

Nokia now plans to make the platform source code for future incrementally improved Symbian releases available to the Symbian technology and business ecosystem. You will be able to find the platform code and details of licensing arrangements through these pages during Q1 of 2011.

Until then, the Symbian Foundation will deliver historical information and the existing open source platform code via an FTP server until March 31, 2011.

During the first quarter of 2011, Nokia will review the existing platform documentation, wiki content, and platform development tools and publish relevant ones through this website.

During the past few months a lot has happened with Symbian. The Nokia N8, the first Symbian^3 smartphone, received record levels of consumer pre-orders and has been shipping for several weeks. At Nokia World in September we launched three further Symbian^3 smartphones, of which the Nokia C6 and Nokia C7 are also already shipping. We also confirmed our expectation to sell more than 50 million Symbian^3 based devices.

On October 21, Nokia announced the focus on Qt and HTML5 for application development across both our Symbian and Meego based portfolios and our plans to deliver incremental software improvements to existing Symbian^3 based devices.

On November 8, the Symbian Foundation announced that it would be ramping down its operations to continue as a licensing entity for the existing Symbian^2 and Symbian^3 code bases. On the same day Nokia confirmed its ongoing commitment to the Symbian platform.

Nokia makes E7 QWERTY slider official: 'beautiful and all business' (update: specs)

Nokia's just unveiled its aluminum-clad E7 QWERTY slider handset. One of the new family of Symbian^3 devices, it has a 4-inch tilting touchscreen display on the front and an 8 megapixel imager capable of 720p video on the back. Yummy. It's said to be the best business device Nokia, or anyone else, has ever produced and comes with the touted ability to create PowerPoint slides on the go. The E7 also features Nokia's new ClearBlack Display sorcery and is expected to ship before the end of the year in exchange for €495 (before taxes and subsidies). Update: By now you'll have noticed that the E7 and N8 are almost identical outside of the E7's 4-inch display and slightly bigger chassis required to host it. There are a few other differences, though. For example, The 12.9mm-thin N8 has an FM transmitter and 2mm charging connector unlike the slightly thicker 13.6mm E7. The E7's bigger display also trims back the reported talk time to 540 minutes (the N8 does 720 minutes). Of course, as part of the business focused E-series, the E7 also features a healthy set of preloaded apps including Mail for Exchange (with MS Outlook sync of contacts, calendar, and notes and multiple calendars with meeting request support), IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quickoffice dynamic premium, Adobe PDF reader, and F-Secure Anti-theft. The N8 counters with the better camera and stereo mic, thanks to a big 1/1.83-inch 12 megapixel sensor and Xenon flash that require some extra girth on the backend. Oh, and no MicroSD slot on the E7 -- you get 16GB and that's it.

Nokia delays E7 slider into 'early 2011'

Oh dear. Like the N8 before it, Nokia just confirmed to us that the Symbian-powered E7 slider will be delayed. The official word has it launching in early 2011, not December 2010. We've been told that Nokia's holding up production due to a "minor durability issue" discovered in the E7 hardware. We can't blame Nokia for wanting to ensure the best possible user experience -- it's just a shame that it will require the holiday shopping season to sort it out.

Lock up your phone

GLOBAL – The arrival of smartphones means you’re not just making phone calls from your Nokia device. You’re also tweeting, emailing, facebooking, shopping and blogging. That’s all great, but it also means that losing your mobile device, or having it stolen, can be as much of a security hazard as losing your laptop or your wallet. Join us below, to learn about the first line of defence against unauthorised users.

Set up a lock code
Do this as soon as possible after you get your new phone. The setting is buried away a little, but only needs doing once and, unlike some other devices, Nokia’s phone lock cannot be sidestepped with a simple hack.

Go into Settings. Then Phone --> Phone management. Lastly, choose the Security settings option and Phone and SIM card under that. Everything you need is on this screen.

The setting you want to change is Lock code. If you tap on this to change it, you can input a numeric code into the screen that follows. We recommend you choose a short code that you’ll easily remember: not as simple as 1234, but maybe your birth year or your house number. Unless you’re a spy or a likely target of industrial espionage, thieves won’t bother trying to hack your device.

From this point, you can lock your phone either on a timed basis, using the ‘Phone autolock period’ or with a short tap on the power button and then choosing ‘Lock phone’.

If you do forget the code, then there’s no simple work-round – that would defeat the purpose. It will have to go in for servicing.

What thieves probably will try is swapping out your SIM card for a pre-pay one. Foil their plans by changing the ‘Lock if SIM card changed’ setting to ‘yes’.

Lastly, switch on ‘Remote phone locking’. This lets you lock your phone by sending it a text message you define on the following screen from another device. If you discover your phone has gone missing, then you can do this to make sure crooks aren’t running up a massive bill for you in calls to paid competition lines. This is a really great new feature on the new Symbian devices and was previously only available on Eseries devices or using third-party software.

A word about WiFi
If you connect to WiFi, then be sure you know you can trust the network access point to which you’re connecting. As highlighted in a recent BBC blog post, it’s possible for dishonest people to set up rogue access points that scan and store every bit of data that passes between your device and the Internet. There are tools that will quickly uncover email and social network passwords, for example. This is an issue that affects all manufacturer’s smartphones and laptops – anything that can connect to a WiFi hotspot.

Like many IT security hazards, the only real cure is smarter users. Don’t set your device to connect to ‘anything it can’. Fortunately, Nokia devices won’t do this unless you explicitly tell them to or inadvertently set up a rogue network as a Destination. If you’re at a cafe or meeting place, ask the owner for the name of the WiFi network – just because a network is called ‘Free Secure WiFi’ doesn’t mean that it’s actually safe. Assess every new network you connect to as a potential risk.

Business users might want to look into the Nokia MobileVPN client available for ESeries and now Symbian^3 devices – you’ll need your IT department’s assistance with this, though. You might also want to look at F-Secure’s Anti Theft for Mobile, allowing for remote data wiping and location finding. Both these solutions will come pre-installed on the forthcoming Nokia E7.

Nokia X7-00 caught on camera again, is headed for a preview

The Nokia X7-00 makes another appearance (with an AT&T badge this time). It's still not officially announced by Nokia but that won't stop the X7 getting an early preview. And those four speakers might turn out to be a sham.

So, someone got their hands on a Nokia X7-00 (codenamed Sushi) and posted a few new photos online. The AT&T logo on the phone means that it will launch in the US but rumor has it that it's going to be available in Europe as well.

Anyway, Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review.com (who isn't exactly on the best of terms with Nokia) said he's busy writing a preview of the X7 - and in another tweet he shares he's not a big fan of the device. It's the same story as with the N8 - the hardware of the Nokia X7-00 is good but Symbian^3 doesn't cut it (according to him, anyway).

From what we know about it, the X7-00 is like a C7 except for a bigger screen (possibly the same 4" AMOLED used in the Nokia E7) and the four speakers. But some new info has surfaced saying that there are only two loudspeakers despite the four grills in the corners of the Nokia X7-00 (which was the case with the Nokia X2).

As for the camera on the back of the Nokia X7-00, it seems to be the same as the one on the C6-01, C7 and E7 - that is 8MP fixed-focus with dual-LED flash.
